These children are from isolated, and remote IDP camps in mountainous region that are in an active conflict zone trapped by the fighting between the ethnic Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Myanmar government forces.

THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF OUR ASSISTANCE

OUR ASSISTANCE TO CHILDREN MAINLY FOCUSSING ON:

  1. IN-DOOR AND OUT-DOOR CORNER SUPPLIES

Knowing that in-door and out-door corner supplies are the vital for helping improve children’s mental and physical development our assistance has given priority to provide items needed for in-door and out-door corner teaching aids for each center. Before procuring ready-made items from the market locally available materials are used to create toys and other game items that are made with the help of parents and skilled persons available in the locality.

  1. BUILDING AND RENOVATION OF THE ECCD CENTERS

Participation of parents and centers management committees is highly encouraged to help build new centers as required and maintain the centers and its surrounding where KDG’s assistance is partially in kinds or cash.

  1. SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING

To help improve children’s health and wellbeing supplementary feeding has been provided which are fed during the session break hour. As the humanitarian assistance to the IDPs by the local and international humanitarian agencies has been very limited since many years the risk of mal nourishment of the children in IDP camps is very high, and thus the supplementary feeding is very much helpful.

  1. WARMTH CLOTHES AND SCHOOL UNIFORMS

Children from ECCD centers from the IDP camps located in high altitude, some of the camps are located as high as above 7000 feet are provided with warmth clothes and while both care givers and ECCD students are provided with school uniforms under this assistance programme.

  1. CAPACITY BUILDING FOR CARE GIVERS

The project team conduct in-service refresher training during the summer break whereas new care givers have been trained as per requirement. The local experienced consultants from KWA have been valuable assets not only to this process but also to all the ECCD centers being run KWA throughout the KIO’s administrative controlled areas in Kachin state.

  1. CAPACITY BUILDING FOR PARENTS AND ECCD CENTER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES

The ECCD centers in the different IDP camps have been constructed in semi-permanent settings to provide early childhood learning opportunities for children under 5 years of age. All the parents and family members will one day return to their villages of origin once the armed conflict situation is improved. Helping to strengthen capacity for parents and management committee members to how to improve the participatory decision-making in the community, forming and ways of working practice within a committee, and enhancing knowledge on parenting and childcare is one of the main activities of this programme. With the knowledge and experience gained, the IDPs upon their return to the village of origin will be able to apply in forming management committee or self-help groups to help themselves with less difficulties.

“I am happy to go to school, and I love to go to school even when the school is off. I’ve learned the names of flowers and fruits, new songs in the school. There are a bunch of playing materials in the school and I played cooking, swinging, climbing, and sliding with my friends. I want to become a good teacher when I grow up that I am happy and love to teach others too”.
